🚧 How to Create a Traffic Management Plan for Your Warehouse

Forklift accidents often happen not because of equipment failure — but because of poor traffic control.

A clear traffic management plan is a core part of employer due diligence under WorkSafeBC expectations.

Here’s how to build one.

1️⃣ Map Your Traffic Flow

Start by identifying:

  • Forklift travel paths

  • Pedestrian routes

  • Loading dock zones

  • Blind corners

  • High-traffic intersections

Separate forklifts and pedestrians wherever possible.

2️⃣ Create Physical Controls

Use:

✔ Floor markings
✔ Guardrails
✔ Bollards
✔ Safety mirrors
✔ Designated crossing zones

Physical separation dramatically reduces collision risk.

3️⃣ Set Speed Expectations

Clearly define:

  • Maximum speed limits

  • No-travel zones

  • Horn-use requirements

  • Right-of-way rules

Post signage consistently throughout the facility.

4️⃣ Train & Enforce

A traffic plan only works if:

  • Operators are trained on it

  • Supervisors enforce it

  • Violations are corrected immediately

Review it during orientation and refresher training.

5️⃣ Reassess Regularly

Update your traffic plan if:

  • Layout changes

  • Racking is added

  • New equipment is introduced

  • Incident trends appear

Proactive review protects workers and reduces liability.
